Sealpac, Naber, PerfoTec to unveil new packaging solution to reduce food waste
Sealpac, Naber Plastics and PerfoTec are unveiling a new packaging solution in a bid to reduce food waste and keep products fresher.
The solution, PerfoLid, will be showcased at this year's Interpack event in Germany.
The firms, which are the members of Save Food initiative, have developed PerfoLid concept to solve the issue of fresh produce waste.
According to the US Food and Agricultural Organization, around 50% of all fresh fruits and vegetables are wasted every year by retailers and consumers across the globe due to their vulnerability and limited shelf life.
PerfoTec provides optimum protective atmosphere condition inside the pack with active modified atmosphere packaging (AMAP).
It is said to be achieved by laser perforation of the top film, where the amount and size of the holes are accommodated as per the breathing pattern of the product.
PerfoTec system offers accurate conditions compared against its alternatives such as pre-perforated film or needle perforation.
Due to this, the shelf life of fresh produce will be extended, enabling to reduce food wastage at retailers.
To protect pre-packaged fruits and vegetables, Sealpac and Naber Plastics provide sealing and lidding options in one product called EasyLid.
EasyLid, which can be combined with PerfoTec system, will create a recloseable pack for fruits and vegetables with extended shelf life.
UK-based retailer Marks and Spencer (M&S) stated: “PerfoTec was proven to deliver two days extra shelf life on strawberries and three days on raspberries, leading to significant reduction in store waste levels of up to 20%, and an increase in availability without any detriment to quality.”
