RKW unveils sustainable, aluminum-free butter wrap alternative

PKBR Staff Writer Published 12 April 2018

RKW has showcased a more sustainable, aluminum-free butter wrap alternative at the Dairy Innovation Summit 2018 in the Netherlands.

Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Commission, the firm’s FPO is used as a butter wrap by the customers.

Since many years, FPO has been using in packaging for both food and non-food markets, and is more successful in the butter market.

RKW’s aluminum-free FPO contains 50% mineral content, which serves as an effective barrier against light, oxygen and water vapor.

The company’s FPO is also fat resistant that makes it more suitable for dairy products. It is also exhibits more tear and dart drop resistance compared to complex laminate solutions such as PE/ paper.

FPO films are suitable with crafted manufacturing of products such as butter, margarine or cottage cheese.

RKW Sweden sales manager Peter Sevonius said: "The high proportion of minerals keeps the use of polymers to a minimum.

“Compared to other packaging solutions, FPO consumes much less energy in the manufacturing process. The combination of these two factors lowers the possible impact on the environment.”

Based in Frankenthal, RKW Group provides hygiene and agricultural films, films for the beverage industry and packaging for powdery goods.

The company also produces films and nonwovens for medical applications, as well as chemical and converting industries.

RKW manufactures laminated films, label films, plaster films, surface protection films, breathable films, embossed films, trikoron-barrier films and vapour barrier films or laminates.

The company also produces shrink films, ultrasonic welding films, courier bags, as well as bags and pouches.

RKW reported total sales of € 905m in the fiscal year 2017. The firm’s 3,000 employees process 378,000 tonnes of plastic materials at 20 locations across the globe.
