Maxwell Chase develops seafood trays to extend shelf life

PKBR Staff Writer Published 30 January 2018

US-based Maxwell Chase has developed a new active packaging solution, SeaWell seafood trays, to extend the shelf life of seafood.

Said to be the first-of-its-kind, the SeaWell seafood trays is designed to extend the shelf life for fresh seafood, in many cases by up to 50% or more.

The packaging, which is claimed to be automation-friendly for high-speed production environments, can increase freshness and visual appeal; absorb odors; and enhance safety, Maxwell said.

The trays, which are available in a signature blue color and a variety of sizes for various capacities, feature integrated absorbent technology which is incorporated into wells at the bottom to absorb excess fluids.

Maxwell said: “The shelf life of frozen seafood also is extended; here, products can be packed frozen and then thawed in the same package maintaining product integrity, with resulting fluids absorbed in the tray’s wells – invisible to consumers, who enjoy a pristine product.”

In addition to reducing fluids exposure, the technology can reduce potential damage to seafood products.

Maxwell Chase general manager Neal Watson said: “Quite simply, the new SeaWell seafood trays have the potential to revolutionize the seafood industry.

“They represent a game-changing technological breakthrough offering superior product protection for customers’ high-value seafood products. The result is extended market reach, enhanced brand recognition and improved consumer experiences.”

The patent-pending SeaWell packaging solution is planned to be introduced at the 2018 Seafood Expo North America, which is scheduled to be held in Boston, US from 11-13 March.
