Kroger joins Sustainable Packaging Coalition to advance Zero waste initiative

American retailing company Kroger has joined the Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC), a membership-based collaborative of companies to advance sustainable packaging, in a bid to advance its Zero waste initiative.

SPC currently comprises more than 130 brands, manufacturers, government officials, academics and organizations.

Kroger has joined SPC in an effort to drive improvements in the sustainability of packaging across its ‘Our Brands’ private-label products.

Kroger corporate affairs group vice-president Jessica Adelman said: "Our membership in this coalition is an important part of Kroger's vision for achieving Zero Hunger | Zero Waste, a key component of how we our living our purpose driven by our Restock Kroger Plan.

“We look forward to collaborating with other brands, packaging manufacturers and other stakeholders to drive positive change in packaging sustainability."

The firm earlier announced its 2020 Sustainability Goals, which aim to optimize 100% of its product packaging by increasing recyclability, reducing excess packaging and increasing certified virgin fiber sourcing, among other things.

Kroger Our Brands vice-president Gil Phipps said that the joining in GreenBlue project SPC will help in creation of new packaging solutions which will have positive impact in the environment.

Phipps added: "This new partnership is another step in our journey and will help us accelerate our commitment to introduce more sustainable packaging."
