Aimplas supports RefuCoat to develop sustainable food packaging solutions

PKBR Staff Writer Published 22 December 2017

Spanish research institute Aimplas is supporting the EU-funded project RefuCoat, which is engaged in the development of recyclable food packaging solutions.

The project is involved in the development of advanced material based on biopolymers to replace the usage of films and trays in food packaging.

The polyglycolic acid (PGA) will be aggregated with modified silica oxide to produce a hybrid coating with oxygen and water vapour barrier properties.

RefuCoat project will also use corn wastes for the development of new PLA grade with better water vapour barrier properties than commercial grades.

The solutions developed under the project will be used to create recyclable packages for chicken, cereals and snacks.

RefuCoat project is managed by 12 partners from five countries, while it is funded by the European Union.

The project intends to develop fully-recyclable food packaging with advanced barrier properties and new functionalities by using high performance coatings.

Active coatings can be used as an alternative material to metallised and modified atmospheric packaging (MAP) in films and trays, helping to reduce the use of non-renewable materials in packaging.

RefuCoat is currently focusing on the development of two packages, including the use of hybrid barrier coatings for savoury products through replacing metallised packages.

The project will also involve in the production of middle chain resins to develop a fully recyclable and biodegradable package for chicken meat products.

Aimplas services include the development of integral and customised solutions by coordinating and developing R&D projects, technical assistance, analysis and testing, competitive intelligence and training.
